NAUSS inaugurates the workshop (Modern Strategies for Combating Counterfeit Medicines)

Naif Arab University for Security Sciences signed today two memoranda of understanding with the International Institute for Research against Counterfeit Medicines in Paris and the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights in Italy. The memoranda were signed in the presence of His Excellency  the President of NAUSS Dr. Abdulmajeed,Bin Abdullah Al-Banyan, the Executive Director of IRACM Judge Bernard Leroy, and the President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights Judge Jean-François Thony.

These two memoranda provide for conducting research of common interest, in addition to participating in academic activities organized by each side, exchanging academic publications and periodicals, work programs, educational techniologies and aids, and exchanging experiences and academic consultations.

The signing ceremonies were attended by the French Ambassador to the Kingdom, Mr. Ludovic Pouille, the Italian Deputy Ambassador to the Kingdom, Valerio Candali, and the Deputy Representative of the European Union, Jaap Ora.

Today also witnessed the launch of the workshop "Modern Strategies for Combating Counterfeit Medicines," organized by NAUSS in cooperation with the International Institute for Research Against Counterfeit Medicines – France and lasted for two days both virtually and face-to-face.

At the beginning of the workshop, His Excellency the President of NAUSS expressed his thanks to the International Institute for Research against Counterfeit Medicines, to the President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, and to the participants from various parties. His Excellency emphasized that organizing this workshop comes within the framework of the efforts of the university (the academic body of the Arab Interior Ministers Council) to enhance cooperation, in addition to improving the performance of Arab personnel in this important aspect related to human health and safety, with the development of methods and techniques of Counterfeit Medicines , the diversity of their causes and the multiplicity of their techniques; this requires the development of new techniques to detect, confront and address their effects, hoping that the workshop results will contribute to achieving its goals and objectives. His Excellency concluded his speech by emphasizing that all the achievements of Naif Arab University for Security Sciences in its field of specialization would not have been possible without the generous support from the host country – the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Highness the Crown Prince, the Royal Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - may God preserve them - and the continuous patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Interior, Honorary President of the  Arab Interior Ministers Council, and Chairman of the Supreme Council of NAUSS, with the support of Their Highnesses and Excellencies, Arab Interior Ministers.

The French Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Ludovic Pouille, praised the fruitful cooperation and strategic partnership between Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, security institutions, and the French Academy since 1985. He stressed the importance of the topic of the workshop, especially in light of what the world is currently going through from the repercussions of the Covid – 19 pandemic. ​

Specialists from 11 Arab countries participated in the work of this workshop: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Republic of Tunisia, the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Iraq, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, the United Comoros Republic, the State of Libya, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The primary aim of the workshop is to evaluate the status of counterfeit medicines, to identify priority areas of security and justice in combating counterfeit medicines, and to highlight the role of regional and international cooperation through research and monitoring.

The workshop will discuss the following topics “Counterfeit medicine trafficking  in the world during 2021 and the importance of regional and international cooperation in combating this phenomenon", a working paper on “The role of Food and Drug Authority in combating counterfeit drugs and the mechanisms of international cooperation with organizations and regulatory authorities", a working paper on “Difficulties and technical obstacles to detecting counterfeit medicines", a working paper on “The harmful effects of counterfeit medicines on health“, a working paper on “Legal loopholes and deterrence difficulties in combating counterfeit medicines“, a working paper on “The role of judges and members of the Public Prosecution Office in the fight against counterfeit medicines" presented by Judge Jacques-Luc Gadou from the French Ministry of Justice, and a paper on “The role of the investigator and the forensic researcher in dealing with counterfeit medicine crimes“, and a scientific paper entitled “The importance of customs control and inspection in combating drug trafficking and counterfeiting“, in addition to a working paper on “Defining an Effective National Strategy".
