Brief Biography

Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Sungkyul University (2008) and obtained his Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the Korea University School of Cybersecurity in 2015 and 2020, respectively. Currently serving as the Director of the Department of Network Forensics and an Assistant Professor at Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, Dr. Kim brings a wealth of experience to his role. Prior to his tenure at NAUSS, he served as an Assistant Professor at Korea University, where he imparted knowledge to undergraduate and graduate students on cyber attacks. Recognized for his teaching prowess, Dr. Kim was honored with the Teaching Excellence Award at Korea University from 2018 to 2020. With a career spanning over 17 years, he has conducted over 130 penetration tests for various clients across diverse industries, holding positions at prestigious firms such as Deloitte and PwC, and specialized consulting firms. Notable accolades include being a member of the Korean national team in Defcon CTF 2007 and winning the First Hacking Defense Contest award sponsored by the Korean government. Dr. Kim is also an author and translator, having penned a book on internet security and translated several publications on security-related topics. His research interests encompass cybercrime, network analysis, vulnerability analysis, smart city security, as well as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT) security.​

Scientific and Professional Experience:

  • Recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award at Korea University (2018, 2019, 2020).

  • Published high-quality scientific research papers in Q1-ranked journals.

  • Served as a Representative Security Consultant Advisor in the Best of the Best (BoB) program sponsored by the Korean government.

  • Conducted over 130 penetration tests for clients across various industries during his tenure at Deloitte, PwC, and boutique consulting firms.

  • Authored a book on hacking and internet security and translated several security-related publications.

  • Achieved sixth place in DefCon CTF 2007 and won the first prize in the First Hacking Defense Contest hosted by the Korea Internet & Security Agency.

  • Acted as a reviewer for IEEE Access, ETRI Journal, IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, KSII Transactions on Internet of Information Systems, and Journal of Information Security and Cybercrimes Research (JISCR).
