The idea of establishing the Council came during the first conference of Arab Interior Ministers, which was held in Cairo in 1977 AD, and it was decided to establish it at the third conference, which was held in Taif in 1980 AD. The Extraordinary Conference of Arab Interior Ministers, held in Riyadh in 1982, ratified the Council’s statute, which was presented to the Council of the League of Arab States in September 1982 and approved.
The Council of Arab Interior Ministers is held in March of each year, the first of which was held in Casablanca in the Kingdom of Morocco in December 1982. The Honorary Chairman of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers is His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Council has a general secretariat headquartered in the Tunisian capital, headed by a full-time Secretary-General who is chosen from the nominations of the member states, is appointed for a three-year renewable term, and is assisted by an assistant secretary-general who is nominated alternately by the member states.
The General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers is the technical and administrative body of the Council, and within its scope, there are five specialized Arab offices, which are supervised by the Secretary-General. Each office is headed by a director who is responsible for managing its work. The Council chooses office directors from among the nominees of the member states. They are appointed for three years, renewable once.
